Like any HVAC system, mini-splits need maintenance to perform at their best. There are usually a lot of questions about what to do and how often to do it. We aim to answer that for you here.
If you need a maintenance, please call us and we’re happy to come out and service each unit. If you’re interested in a service plan, check out our Partner Plus Plan that includes your maintenances.
A mini-split maintenance includes cleaning filters and coils, checking refrigerant levels, and ensuring proper airflow and drainage. If you haven’t had a service in a while, we may recommend a “bib kit” for a deep cleaning.
Mini-split filters are usually pretty thin pieces of washable media. You can rinse them off an put them back in. Because of the filtration on them isn’t very robust, dust and dirt can accumulate on the blower motor even with regular filter cleanings. It’s hard to see and even harder for a homeowner to clean. If we see there’s build up on or behind the blower, we can drop the blower and do a more thorough cleaning of the inside of the cabinet and the blower (not all manufacturers and models allow for the blower to be removed).
People generally ask if you need a maintenance once or twice a year. It really depends on how you use them. Because almost all mini-split systems are heat pumps, if you are using them regularly in the winter, we’d recommend twice a year. If it’s primarily for cooling or heating and your not using it at the other time of year, once a year works.
Regular maintenance helps keep the efficiency high and it will extend system life. It can also help you save on very costly repairs. Each mini-split has its own drainage system for condensation. Typically there’s a reservoir that drains through a pipe to the outside. Over time, that can get gunked up and it could cause a blockage. If that happens, you are looking at water spilling into the finished space out of the unit. Flushing those lines is a part of our maintenance and an easy way to prevent a more costly disaster.
Regular maintains your manufacturer warranty. If we’ve installed your system, we want to make sure we’re seeing it at least once a year.
